Bio

Born in ’68 and raised on the Prairie, mostly Winnipeg, I first stumbled into stone carving in my early 20s, dabbling on and off for a few years until the late '90s, when I happened to see a documentary about Isamu Noguchi, inspiring me to pursue sculpture in a more serious way.

In ’99, I moved to the West Coast, turning the page to begin my new career, and very quickly was welcomed into the community of artists on Salt Spring Island. There, my early endeavors were warmly received and my efforts nurtured, allowing me to explore and develop my skills in my own idiosyncratic ways, without formal instruction, but with occasional access to advice from more experienced artists.

In 2002, my work enjoyed two very significant turning points. First, I discovered a radically new approach, initially in seeking a solution to a problem, but soon developing into an entirely new medium in its own right, to which I eventually began to refer as multistone. Second, I was invited to show alongside well-established professional artists in a prominent local gallery. This had a tremendous effect on how I came to see myself as an artist, giving me the confidence to commit more and more fully to my practice in the new knowledge that a practicable career path lay open, later to continue after moving to Vancouver Island in 2010.

Over those years, as my work continued to develop in new directions, many new ways of thinking about it have presented themselves. In the course of that time, I’ve been exploring many styles, subjects, and themes, and I will no doubt continue to allow myself that freedom of exploration. Yet I often return to many of these themes and subjects with new perspectives and approaches gained from new experiences – perhaps the way of an artist whose life’s career is as much his canvas as the work itself. (I hope that’s me.)

In 2024, I moved back to Winnipeg and have again established a studio in which to continue my sculpture practice. In this iteration, I am engaged in many of the same kinds of explorations I’ve long pursued, knowing that this approach has stood me well in my quest for new challenges. New ideas are bound to ensue...
