MultiStone
What is it and where does it come from?
Stone sculptors typically begin their process by removing pieces from the blocks they're working on, often producing a good deal of off-cut 'waste'. If any of those pieces are large enough, some may be used for smaller sculptures. The remainder are often simply discarded.
Multistone refers to a medium that recovers these discarded off-cuts, recombines them in various ways, sometimes in a random matrix, sometimes more deliberately considered, creating composite blocks of stone. Whereas a typical stone sculpture is made from a block that originated from a unique location, multistone sculptures incorporate pieces of different types of stone from all over the world.
Over the years, I've developed a number of lamination techniques that allow for a wide range of design possibilities. The medium allows a very different set of approaches than those that are normally available in stone. Instead of needing to work within the constraints of a particular block of stone, I'm able to design the block itself, building into it the colour characteristics I plan to express in the final stages.
